Man in chase held on burglary charge

January 23, 1995

A man in a blue and silver mini-van led police on a 5-mile chase before he was arrested early yesterday in the burglary of a Paceway Convenience Store in the 1300 block of Defense Highway.

Anne Arundel police said they received a call at 4:32 a.m. Sunday that someone had broken into the store and was fleeing in such a van. A few minutes later, two officers spotted a van fitting the description on Crownsville Road at Generals Highway and tried unsuccessfully to stop it.

Police chased the van about 5 miles on Generals Highway before the driver pulled over, jumped out and ran off into the woods, they said.

Officers brought in a tracing dog and a state police helicopter to chase the suspect.

They arrested Steven Gregory Passero, 30, of the 1100 block of Claire Road, Crownsville, and charged him with burglary, theft, fleeing and eluding an officer.

He was being held in the Anne Arundel County Detention Center yesterday in lieu of $16,500 bail.

Woman charged in shooting of tenant

A 51-year-old Cape St. Claire woman was charged with assault last night after a tenant was shot in the foot with a rifle during an argument at her home in the 1100 block of St. George Drive, police said.

Police said Allen Fawler, 41, was wounded by a shot fired through a bedroom door as he banged on it to ask for the keys to his landlady's truck. He was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Barbara Rudd, who called the police to report the incident, was charged in the shooting.
