LARRY POPE

The volunteer: Mr. Pope was a finalist in last year's J. C. Penney Golden Rule Awards for his volunteer work with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Maryland.

He has been a Big Brother to three youngsters since 1992 and is on the organization's volunteer board of directors.

Mr. Pope and his wife, Alita, live in the Elizabeth's Landing section of Pasadena. He works for Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. in the security department. As BGE's on-site volunteer BTC coordinator in his department, he helps co-workers with volunteer activities and projects.

Several evenings a week he works with mildly retarded people at Bello Machre in Glen Burnie, a residential facility that helps clients learn practical skills.

When he's not volunteering, he is involved in the activities of Masonic Temple, Lodge 57.

The J. C. Penney Golden Rule Awards describe Mr. Pope as "living proof that mentoring works. . . . Larry genuinely loves children, cares about their future, and believes that a positive role model and a gentle push is all they need."

Volunteer's comment: "I've been involved with Big Brothers since 1992. Being on the [volunteer] board, I get to see where everything starts, where the money goes.

"It provides one-on-one with a little brother or little sister, in a single-parent home. We generate activities -- go to museums, movies, walks, talk together on the telephone, help them with homework, anything that we like to do together.

"One of the reasons why I give my dedication and my heart to this organization is that I can see the potential growth and what affect it has on the community when special attention is given to the children."

About the organization: Anyone interested in volunteering with Big Brothers and Big Sisters can call the local office in Severna Park at 544-6220.

The program: Nominations are being accepted for the J. C. Penney Golden Rule Awards, which are given to volunteers who have improved the quality of life in their community.

Nomination forms for the 1995 awards can be obtained at the catalog desks at all Maryland J. C. Penney stores or by calling 298-8100.

The nomination deadline is March 4.
