Bays toy with Washington, earn 7th straight win, 21-3

If last night's U.S. Interregional Soccer League game at Du Burns Arena had been a boxing match, it would have been stopped.

Scoring at will in the second half, the Baltimore Bays turned a win into a blowout. The Bays scored 10 goals in the fourth quarter on their way to a 21-3 victory over the Washington Mustangs.

The win improved the Bays' record to 9-2 and brought their winning streak to seven games.

Billy Ronson led the way with three goals and eight assists, and Mark Mettrick and Joe Layfield chipped in with four goals apiece.

"People say not to run up a score," Ronson said, "but my feeling is, if you get someone down you bury them because nobody takes any mercy on you."

The Bays, first in the league's North-South Division, ran out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Joe Layfield opened the scoring 7:37 into the game when he followed up a shot by Parravano that was in and out of the arms of Washington goalie Alex Sandoval.

Ronson, the league's defending and current assist leader with 27, assisted on Baltimore's next two goals, including one by Rob Elliott and another by Joe Barger (two goals, one assist).

Baltimore goalkeeper Dave Tenney, who was selected the USISL's Defensive Player of the Week last week after recording 18 saves in the Bays' 12-5 victory over the Reading Freedom, preserved the Bays' first-quarter shutout by turning away Mustangs forward Festus George.

Washington tested a new goalie in the second quarter, but the Mustangs quickly learned that Moe Siasi was not the answer. Mettrick made it 4-0 when he took a pass from Ronson and scored with the help of Barger.
