Baseball Los Angeles Dodgers -- Named Charles "Timmy" Thompson part-time scout.

New York Yankees -- Named Gary Denbo third base coach and Dave Schuler pitching coach at Triple-A Columbus.

St. Paul Saints (Northern League) -- Sold the contracts of 2B Doug Kimbler and P Joe Brownholtz to the Chicago Cubs and SS Greg D'Alexander to the Florida Marlins.

Sioux City Explorers (Northern League) -- Traded the rights to 3B Frank Valdez to the Sioux Falls Canaries for the rights to former Orioles C Carl Nichols.

Corpus Christi Barracudas (Texas-Louisiana League) -- Sold the contract of SS Gary Hagy to the Cleveland Indians. Sold the contract of P Tony Mack to the California Angels.

Basketball Boston Celtics -- Placed F Derek Strong on the injured list with a bruised muscle in his left shoulder. Activated C Acie Earl from the injured list.

Charlotte Hornets -- Activated former Washington Bullets G Michael Adams. Placed F Tom Tolbert (left foot) on the injured list. Announced that F Kenny Gattison and G Tony Bennett underwent successful surgery to repair injuries. Gattison had disk material removed from neck and replaced with a section of his pelvic bone, which was fused to existing vertebrae. He is expected to miss the rest of the season. Bennett had scar tissue removed from a ligament in the arch of his left foot. His status is uncertain.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Signed G Danny Young to a 10-day contract, filling the roster spot created by the expiration of G Lester Conner's 10-day contract.

Utah Jazz -- Signed G Walter Bond to a second 10-day contract.

College

NCAA -- Granted Arizona State LB Justin Dragoo a sixth year of eligibility.

Nebraska -- Announced the resignation of linebacker coach Kevin Steele.

New York University -- Announced the retirement of AD Dan Quilty effective Aug. 31.

Football

NFL -- Added Pittsburgh Steelers TE Eric Green, Cleveland Browns DE Rob Burnett and Los Angeles Raiders QB Jeff Hostetler to the AFC Pro Bowl team and San Francisco 49ers RB Ricky Watters and New Orleans Saints DE Wayne Martin to the NFC team as injury replacements. Added Cleveland Browns LB Pepper Johnson to the AFC team and Minnesota Vikings LB Jack Del Rio to the NFC team as "need players."

Green Bay Packers -- Announced the signing of seven free agents: DB Reggie Holt, LB Bernardo Harris, WR Brad Lamb, WR Kevin Glenn, TE Michael Bartrum, TE Jeff Thomason and K Dirk Borgognone.

Minnesota Vikings -- Named Ray Sherman quarterbacks coach. Reassigned Carl Hargrave from offensive assistant/tight ends coach to running backs coach.

Hockey Edmonton Oilers -- Signed C Mats Lindgren to a five-year contract and said he will join the team after completing the Swedish Elite League season.

Florida Panthers -- Sent RW Brad Smyth to AHL Springfield on loan.

Los Angeles Kings -- Agreed to terms with G Kelly Hrudey on a two-year contract.

New York Rangers -- Agreed to terms with G Mike Richter.

Ottawa Senators -- Signed C Radek Bonk to a five-year contract.

Vancouver Canucks -- Announced that assistant coach Ron Smith will handle the coaching duties while Rick Ley serves a three-game suspension.

Washington Capitals -- Signed D Mark Tinordi to a five-year, $10.85 million contract.

AHL -- Selected Hershey, Pa., as the site of the 1996 All-Star Game.
