Man steals $250 sewing machine from store

January 20, 1995

A man walked out of the Pasadena Ames store Wednesday evening with a $250 sewing machine and drove off before anyone could stop him, county police said yesterday.

Joanna Hawkins, 31, an assistant manager at the store in the 8100 block of Ritchie Highway, saw the man carrying the sewing machine toward the front doors shortly after 6 p.m. She called the electronics department to find out whether the man had paid for the machine. The man was gone by the time she found out he hadn't, police said.

Ms. Hawkins saw the man get into a blue 1979 Chevrolet and drive off. She copied the tag number of the car and gave it to authorities, police said.

Robber forces workers into vault

A gunman forced several employees of a Pasadena bank into a vault Wednesday afternoon and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money, county police said.

The man walked into the Greater Atlantic Savings Bank in the 8000 block of Ritchie Highway shortly before 2 p.m. He pulled out a black semiautomatic handgun and forced the employees into a vault, then took the money from the safe and ran from the bank, police said.

The suspect was described as a black male between 20 and 30 years old, about 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing a kelly green, waist-length jacket, black pants and dark sunglasses.
