Purvis' 21 lead Terps to easy win

COLLEGE PARK -- After leading the Maryland women's basketball team in minutes in a very promising freshman season last year, Lillian Purvis saw her confidence and her playing time take a serious nose-dive last month.

But an injury and a suspension have pushed Purvis and her jump shot back into the Maryland rotation, and she has made the most of her opportunities, especially in last night's 87-53 laugher over Iona.

Purvis hit her first five shots on the way to 21 points to pace the Terps (9-7) to their second straight win. It was the 399th victory of coach Chris Weller's 20-year career, and her 200th at Cole Field House.

"The post players did a really good job of getting me good passes and I hit my shots when I had them," said Purvis, a 5-foot-7 guard from Jacksonville, N.C.

Purvis, who began the year as a starter, was benched in mid-December, and barely played in Maryland's 73-68 loss to Loyola.

But Kelley Gibson's torn knee ligament and last week's suspension of Kwana Williams have moved Purvis back into the Maryland mix.

"I think we've gotten to a point where everybody is working well," said Weller.

The Terps were never seriously threatened by the Gaels (3-11), who were playing their fourth game in six nights. Maryland opened the game with an 11-0 run, with Purvis scoring nine points.

Freshman forward Kalisa Davis came off the bench to chip in 12 points, helping Maryland take a 44-25 lead at the break.
