Detroit Tigers -- Made a qualifying offer to C Mickey Tettleton equal to 100 percent of his 1994 salary. Announced that they will not offer a contract to P Joe Boever. Named Skeeter Barnes player-coach and Rick Adair pitching coach at Triple-A Toledo.

Montreal Expos -- Named Kevin Malone VP and GM. Signed P Denis Boucher to a minor-league contract.

Rochester Red Wings (Triple-A) -- Named Glenn Geffner radio announcer.

Palm Spring Suns (WBL) -- Unaffiliated team signed IF Marc Di Carlo and IF Frank Valdez.

Colorado Silver Bullets -- Women's pro team announced that Phil Niekro will return as manager and Joe Niekro as pitching coach. Added hitting and outfield coach Johnny Grubb and infield coach Bruce Crabbe.

Basketball

Denver Nuggets -- Named Tom Nissalke assistant coach. Placed former Washington Bullets F Tom Hammonds (sprained ligament in his right knee) on the injured list. Activated G Darnell Mee from the injured list.

College

Big East -- Named Miami G Kevin Norris

(Lake Clifton) men's basketball Rookie of the Week.

Patriot League -- Named Navy freshman Michael Heary men's basketball Rookie of the Week for the third consecutive week.

Bridgewater, Va. -- Named Michael B. Clark football coach.

DePaul -- Announced that basketball player Will Macon has been suspended for one game after being ejected Saturday for fighting.

Johns Hopkins -- Promoted associate AD Thomas Calder to AD.

Maryland -- C Joe Smith was named ACC men's basketball Player of the Week and ECAC men's basketball Player of the Week.

North Carolina-Charlotte -- Accepted an invitation to participate in forming a new athletic conference.

Rutgers -- Announced that G Al Karner (stress fracture in his right foot) will miss tonight's game.

Texas Tech -- Announced that redshirt freshman G Jason Hamm (1.9 ppg) will transfer.

Los Angeles Rams -- Named Steve Ortmayer VP/football operations.

New Orleans Saints -- Named Monte Kiffin defensive coordinator.

Seattle Seahawks -- Rehired two assistant coaches who were fired Dec. 29: defensive line coach Tommy Brasher and running backs coach Clarence Shelmon.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- Announced the sale of the team to Malcolm Glazer.

Edmonton Oilers -- Signed LW Ryan Smyth to a four-year contract.

Hartford Whalers -- Recalled LW Bob Wren, D Marek Malik, D Jason McBain and D John Stevens from AHL Springfield.

Montreal Canadiens -- Named Mario Roberge player-assistant coach of AHL Fredericton.

New Jersey Devils -- Recalled D Chris McAlpine and D Cale Hulse from AHL Albany.

St. Louis Blues -- Called up F Patrice Tardif and D Terry Hollinger from IHL Peoria. Agreed to a three-year contract with Prime Sports Network.

San Jose Sharks -- Signed RW Shean Donovan.

Washington Capitals -- Announced that they failed to reach contract agreement with D Brendan Witt.
