Severn man, 20, charged after police standoff

A 20-year-old Severn man was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a 50-minute standoff with state police on Saturday.

State police said they were trying to serve three felony theft warrants on Troy Donovan Sedgwick of the 1800 block of Dove Court when the standoff began. Officers arrived at Mr. Sedgwick's house at 12:45 p.m., but they discovered that he had barricaded himself in the bathroom and was holding a knife to his throat.

"He kept saying, 'Stand back or I'll kill you or myself,' " said Tfc. Kevin Ringgold, one of two officers at the scene. "We finally convinced him to turn himself in. He asked for his tennis shoes, put down the knife and it was over."
