Lt. governor-elect to speak at graduation

January 15, 1995

Lt. Gov.-elect Kathleen Kennedy Townsend will be guest speaker at the third Operation Challenge graduation ceremony, scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at Harford Community college.

Certificates of completion will be awarded to 58 graduates from the Baltimore-Washington area.

Operation Challenge, which is coordinated through the Maryland National Guard and the state's Partners in Prevention program, is a 22-week, military-oriented resident program at Aberdeen Proving Ground for high school dropouts between the ages of 16 and 18.

Program participants learn responsibility and discipline, and work toward passing the GED examination.

The resident portion of the program is followed by an intensive year-long mentoring phase to help students adjust to the world of work and continued education.

The fourth Operation Challenge class is scheduled to run from Feb. 26 to July 29.
