Rack 'em up

Attention all pool sharks: Looking for some competition? See if you're good enough to match cues with the best players of the Women's Professional Billiards Association at the Baltimore Billiards 1995 WPBA Classic Tour, Jan. 18-22. For a nominal donation to the House of Ruth, you can "shoot the pro" with a woman who will most likely best you. But don't let that stop you; even if you lose, you're sure to pick up some pointers from the pros. The "shoot the pro" competition takes place on Jan. 18 only. From Jan. 19-22, the WPBA will hold tournament match play for all to watch and enjoy. Just remember: No wagering!

The WPBA Classic Tour, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Jan. 18; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Jan. 19-21; noon to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 22. Baltimore Billiards, 7701 Eastern Ave. Admission is $8 each day on Jan. 18, 19, 20 and 21; $10 on Jan. 22; or $30 for a weekend pass. A separate donation is required for the "shoot the pro" competition. Proceeds benefit the House of Ruth, a shelter for battered women. Call (410) 282-7968.

Circus time

I always have problems at three-ring circuses. Whenever I'm watching ring one, I'm missing something cool in ring three. If I watch ring three, then I miss something better in ring two. That's why I've got my sights set on the Pickle Family Circus, Jan. 17-18, at Towson State University's Stephens Hall. The Pickle circus, founded in 1974, is part of the "new circus" renaissance. Instead of three rings of mass hysteria geared toward those with really short attention spans, the Pickle has one ring. The troupe says it focuses on the art of performing rather than the glitz of the circus. The performances benefit TSU's Dance on the Edge series.

Pickle Family Circus, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17-18, Stephens Hall, Towson State University, Osler and Cross Campus drives. Admission is $16 general admission, $14 for seniors, TSU staff and alumni, $8 for students. Call (410) 830-ARTS.
