Loyola defeats Niagara, 79-73, in MAAC opener

NIAGARA FALLS. N.Y. -- John McDonald scored a career-high 20 points and Milt Williams added 14 -- including 12 in the second half -- as Loyola began Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a 79-73 victory over Niagara last night.

Loyola ended a four-game losing streak as five Greyhounds scored in double figures, including Julian Tate (12 points), B. J. Pendleton (10 points, eight rebounds) and Catonsville High School graduate Teron Owens, who tied his career high with 10 points and handed out a game-high six assists.

Niagara (3-12, 0-1) was led by Jermaine Young (15 points, game-high 12 rebounds).

The Greyhounds (5-8, 1-0) trailed 35-28 at halftime, but scored a season-best 51 points in the second half.

Loyola trailed 52-42 with 13:26 left, but went on a 13-3 run to tie the game on Williams' three-pointer with 8:59 left.

After a tie at 57, Williams' three-pointer with 7:43 left sent the Greyhounds ahead for good.
