Man, woman are charged with shoplifting

January 12, 1995

A man and a woman were arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with shoplifting more than $300 worth of merchandise from a Sears store in Parole Plaza, county police said yesterday.

Stephen Baer, 29, a special police officer at the store, told police he saw a man and a woman go to the men's department about 3:30 p.m. Each took a coat from a rack, removed the tags and put on the coat, he said. The pair then went to the linen department, where the woman took a package of sheets from the display and hid them in a shopping bag, Mr. Baer told police.

Security officers stopped the couple as they tried to leave the store without paying for the $340 worth of goods, according to police.

Mr. Baer used his special police powers to charge the couple, who were taken to the Southern District station and booked, police said.

Debra Lee Carlson, 37, of the 11000 block of Edmonston Road in Greenbelt, Prince George's County, and Jeffrey Desmond Evans, 38, of the 600 block of 12th St. N.E. in Washington were charged with theft over $300, police said.
