Health store robbery under investigation

January 10, 1995

Howard County police are investigating the armed robbery Friday night of a health store in The Mall in Columbia's Town Center.

According to police, the robber entered General Nutrition Center about 7:30 p.m. and asked the clerk about the price of an item. While the woman answered, the man pulled a small, dark-colored semiautomatic handgun and ordered her into a back office, police said.

The man took the woman's wallet and tried to open the cash register but fled when he could not. Mall security officers saw the man flee and chased him, police said.

Howard County police and a state police helicopter team searched the area surrounding the mall, but could not find the robber.

Police said the man, 20 to 25 years old, was described as a thin black male, 5 feet 9 inches tall. He wore a royal blue jacket and a dark stocking cap, police said.

Teen robbed of radio while walking home

A 15-year-old Columbia boy was robbed at gunpoint of his Walkman radio while he was walking home Saturday, Howard County police said.

The victim was not injured. Police said the robbers, who wore ski masks, had been following the boy in their black Chevrolet Beretta with tinted windows for several blocks, all the way to his apartment.

Before he entered his home, about 7:40 p.m., the vehicle screeched to a stop and one of the occupants pointed a gun out the window. The driver and another passenger got out of the car, demanded the boy's gym bag and emptied it onto the ground before escaping with the radio, police said.
