The Volunteer: Ms. Preisser was named MS Individual of the Year for the southern Maryland region in October.

Although she has multiple sclerosis, she has volunteered with the Maryland chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and other area groups.

The Arnold resident is the co-chairwoman on the local MS Branch Council and is an active fund-raiser. She also assists with chapter service programs and support groups.

Ms. Preisser is helping to develop a library for clients of the MS branch office in Millersville.

A former addictions counselor, she does volunteer work at Chrysalis House in Pasadena, a drug rehabilitation facility for women, and serves on the board of directors for Edge Meade, a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed boys in Prince George's County.

Dee Myers, director of public relations for the Maryland chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society writes of Ms. Preisser that she "was honored as an individual who has [risen] above her problems to meet life's challenges and reaches out to help others. She has volunteered on all levels for the MS Society and still finds time to help in her community."

Volunteer's comments: "When you help other people, you help yourself. I enjoy getting involved and being involved. It's a good way to keep a positive attitude.

"My involvement slowly grew. At first I didn't know much about the disease so I began to go to a self-help group. I've never been one to sit around and do nothing. I like to be active and push my self to the limit. If there is something I can do to help I want to be there.

"Active participation is a sure cure for depression and loneliness," said the mother of four grown children.

"I get more reward out of volunteering then getting paid. It's rewarding . . . when you can see somebody that you've reached your hand out to and they have a smile and a thank you, or a hug. There's no amount of money that can replace that."
