County worker arrested in sting operation

January 05, 1995

Police arrested a county employee and seized 9 ounces of cocaine and $6,500 during a drug sting operation yesterday.

Carl Joseph Schmidt, 28, of the 700 block of 213th St. was charged with possession of cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine. He was arrested shortly before 1 p.m. on Hickory Point Road in Pasadena. Mr. Schmidt works for the Eastern District Roads Division of the county public works department, police said.

Detectives started investigating the case two months ago. Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Johnson said the suspect was arrested in a "buy/bust" operation, in which undercover officers or informants buy drugs from a suspected dealer.

Couple arrested after bar fight

A Pasadena couple were arrested Sunday morning after police struggled to subdue them during a bar fight in the 8500 block of Fort Smallwood Road.

Officer James Batten Jr. and Officer Shannon Mack were on routine patrol about 1:30 a.m. when they saw several people fighting on the parking lot of A. L. Gator's bar. When the officers broke up the fight, all of the combatants except one man left. When they told that man to leave, he grabbed Officer Mack with both hands and cursed him, police said.

As Officer Mack tried to arrest the man, the man's wife tried to pull him away, police said. The woman grabbed Officer Batten's baton when he went to help Officer Mack. The officers eventually forced the husband and wife to the ground and handcuffed them.

George Andrew Shapard, 25, and Nicole Dawn Shapard, 23, of the 3500 block of Old Crown Drive were charged with disorderly conduct, police said.
