Crime rate increases 2.3% in 1st 9 months

Robberies, aggravated assaults and larcenies in Carroll County all increased in the first nine months of 1994 compared with the same period last year.

The overall rate of serious crimes rose 2.3 percent, according to a report released last week by state police.

Carroll County registered 44 robberies this year. That was an increase of 18 reported robberies over the period from January ++ through September 1993.

Larcenies showed the largest increase, registering 1,677 for 1994 compared with 1,590 for the same time last year.

Aggravated assaults rose from 89 in 1993 to 133 this year, according to the report.

The county had two homicides in 1994, a 50 percent decrease from the first nine months of 1993. Rapes dropped to 20, compared with 28 reported last year.

Murder in the two counties to the west of Carroll, Frederick and Washington, jumped greatly compared with 1993, when each county reported two for the first nine months of the year.

This year, the count in Frederick County was nine, with Washington County reporting eight murders.

In Carroll, burglaries dropped from 584 to 518 this year and motor vehicle thefts also showed a decrease. There were 138 thefts of motor vehicles reported in the first nine months of 1993 and 121 this year, according to the report.

A total of 2,515 crimes were reported in the county from January through September 1994, compared with 2,459 for the same period of 1993.

Total crime in the state increased by 1 percent this year compared with the same period of 1993, according to the report.
