All-Harford County Field Hockey Teams

* Rachel Simon, Fallston, junior, link -- She was the catalyst behind the Cougars' second straight state championship with her aggressive link play, especially in transition. The team's second-leading scorer (tied) with six goals, she was the county's only first-team All-State selection. A year ago, she was the only sophomore named All-County (second team). * Phyllis Hemmes, Bel Air -- This season, her 24th as head coach, she took a squad that returned only two starters and combined it with a mixture of reserves and former junior varsity players to run through a regular-season schedule 10-2. In the playoffs, the Bobcats successfully defended a regional title, then lost to Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 1-0, in the state semifinals.

* Joie Acosta, Bel Air, senior, link -- She was the team's top scorer with eight goals and three assists, and had one of the Bobcats' two shootout goals that produced a 1-0 overtime win over Franklin in the 3A regional final. She had the goal against North Harford in the team's only one-goal margin of victory (1-0) in the regular season.

* Erin Alex, Bel Air, senior, goalkeeper -- A first-year starter, she had two of her best games in the playoffs, making 13 stops against Franklin and nine against Bethesda-Chevy Chase. For the season, she had 12 shutouts and made 61 saves behind a back line that included one starter and two part-time players from a year ago.

* Carrie Carpenter, Bel Air, senior, link -- One of two returning starters for the Bobcats, she had one goal and four assists, and complemented the play of Acosta in the middle.

* Carrie Grable, Fallston, junior, link -- One of five junior starters, she had six goals, including the first one in the Cougars' 2-0 state Class 2A final victory over Elkton. Her hustle and stick skills enabled her to team with Simon to dominate the middle.

* Julie Haire, Fallston, senior, back -- A second-team All-State selection and the only repeater from last year's All-County first team, she anchored the county's best four-back defense. The group limited the opposition to an average of fewer than two shots.

* Christie Schwartz, C.M. Wright, junior, back -- One of only two return ing starters for first-year coach Carolyn Wright, the junior center back took charge of a starting lineup made up largely of seniors with relatively little experience. Wright finished with a winning record in the county league.

* Kathleen Turk, Fallston, senior, back -- A year ago, she was just another reserve on a championship team; this season, playing alongside two returning starters, she elevated her game to their level. She had three goals to be one of the team's 11 scorers.

* Karen Wagner, Bel Air, senior, back -- The other returning starter for Hemmes, she was the key defender in front of Alex.

* Amie Wang, Bel Air, senior, forward -- From seeing limited playing time last year, she improved to a point where she was second to Acosta in team scoring with five goals and four assists. She had the winning goal (assisted by Carpenter) in a Class 3A quarterfinal 3-2 win over Parkville.

* Meredith Wienhold, Fallston, senior, forward -- She was the county's leading scorer with 11 goals, including an unassisted one that iced the team's state championship. Last year, as a part-time player, she scored one goal.

* Katie Wirth, Fallston, junior, back -- An honorable-mention All-State choice, not only was she a valuable defender, but she collected four goals and two assists.
