Fire causes $170,000 in damage to house

A fire caused about $170,000 worth of damage to a house in the 8000 block of Clark Station Road early Friday, county fire officials said. No one was injured.

Chief Gary Sheckells, a Fire Department spokesman, said the blaze started from ashes that had been placed in a plastic container and left by a car in the garage.

A Toyota Cressida, was destroyed.

Man charged in robbery of Ritchie Highway hotel

County police arrested a 22-year-old Glen Burnie man Friday in connection with the robbery of the Holiday Inn in the 6300 block of Ritchie Highway that day.

Police said a man armed with a small handgun entered the hotel about 7 a.m. and ordered the desk clerk to empty the cash drawer. The man took the money and ran.

After the clerk described the gunman, police went to a home in the 200 block of Warfield Road, Glen Burnie, and arrested Purnell G. Carter, 22, who lives there. Mr. Purnell was charged with armed robbery, a handgun violation and theft after the clerk identified him, police said.
