Towson denied NCAA spot

Junior setter Kathy Granack led the way with 42 assists and 19 digs as Southern Conference champion Appalachian State earned its second consecutive NCAA tournament berth by sweeping Big South Conference champion Towson State, 15-9, 15-12, 15-11, last night at the Towson Center.

The Mountaineers (30-5), who have won six matches in a row and 23 of their past 25, trailed in the first game by as much as 9-3 before scoring 12 unanswered points to win.

Towson State (19-15) was led by senior Christy Hutson (Glen Burnie) and Heidi Schaefer (Elkton) with 13 kills apiece, and senior setter Connie Blades (North Caroline) contributed 29 assists.
