Woman's charred body found in brush fire debris

November 16, 1994

Firefighters putting out a brush fire in Arnold discovered the charred body of a woman in the debris, county police said.

The woman -- whose identity was unknown -- was found about 11:20 a.m., moments after the firefighters extinguished the blaze in the 100 block of W. Campus Drive, police said. The cause of death was listed as suspicious, and police said they had little information to follow up last night.

An autopsy was to be performed today. Anyone with any information about the woman's identity or who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area where the body was found was asked to call the county police homicide unit at 222-3456.

Woman foils purse-snatch try

A Millersville woman was slightly injured Monday when a youth grabbed her purse and dragged her several feet during an attempted purse-snatching, police said.

Barbara Jean Hoffman, 46, had just walked out of the 7-Eleven store in the 400 block of Old Mill Road about 7:30 p.m. when, she told police, a young man walked up behind her and grabbed her purse from her right shoulder. Ms. Hoffman struggled and was dragged a few feet down the street before the young man gave up and ran toward Chalet Drive, police said.

Ms. Hoffman, who suffered bruises on her knees, right elbow and right shoulder, refused medical treatment.
