TC Shara Boonshaft

School: Centennial High School

Hometown: Columbia

Age: 17

Shara serves as the school's Student Government Association president this year and has been a class board member since her freshman year. She belongs to the National Honor Society and the Human Relations Club.

She played varsity soccer for four years, varsity basketball her sophomore year and varsity lacrosse her junior year.

Aside from her school activities and her nearly perfect grade point average that places her in the top 5 percent of her class, she's trying to develop a women's studies program for Howard County schools. She's looking at college-level curricula to see whether they can be adapted for high-schoolers.

She started the project because she was surprised that only one high school has a literature unit that uses books written by women.

Plans: She wants to pursue women's studies, although she hasn't considered majoring in the subject.

Her comments: Ever since she wrote a "women in sports" term paper in ninth grade, "Every chance I have to write a research paper, I always find a way to do it on a women's issue," she said.

Send nominations to Student Standout, The Sun for Howard County, 5570 Sterrett Place, Suite 300, Columbia 21044. Please enclose a brief description of the student's activities and a phone number to reach the student.
