3 men charged with possession of cocaine

Annapolis police arrested a Bowie man Wednesday on charges of possession of crack cocaine, the third crack cocaine arrest this week in the city and the second in the same block, authorities said yesterday.

Xavier S. Hawkins, 31, of the 8700 block of Maple Road was arrested shortly after 7 p.m. in the first block of Carver Street, police said. Police said they recovered $450 worth of a substance that tested positive as crack cocaine.

Officers said they first saw Mr. Hawkins sitting on a wall. When they approached him, he got up to leave. He told police he was visiting his cousin, but couldn't say where she lived. Officers arrested him after they found the drugs by the wall where he was sitting.

The day before, Alfred G. Claggett, 19, of 1709 Circle Road, Severn, allegedly fled when police approached him in the same block of Carver Street about the same time of day. Police said they apprehended him, searched him and found $630 worth of suspected crack on him.

He was charged with possession and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.

In another incident Tuesday, police approached Gary R. Johnson, 38, of 14120 Peartree Lane, Silver Spring, as he was standing at the intersection of Clay and West Washington streets.

Mr. Johnson allegedly ran as police approached him and dropped a bag containing 19 grams of suspected crack cocaine worth at least $1,890, police said.

He was charged with possession and possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine.

All three were being held at the county jail yesterday.
