Spirit cuts Gyau, signs O'Kelly

The other half of what the Spirit hoped would be a one-two offensive combination has disintegrated. First Jean Harbor, now Philip Gyau.

The Spirit yesterday released Gyau, a former Maryland Bay who was slow in making the transition to indoor soccer.

No sooner had the Spirit released Gyau than it signed Pat O'Kelly, 27, a former All-American from Seton Hall. The Dublin, Ireland, native will join the team for games tomorrow at the Chicago Power and Saturday at the Canton Invaders.

"Pat's style is similar to Brad Smith's," said Spirit coach Dave MacWilliams, referring to the rugged target man obtained last week from the Dayton Dynamo. "He's hard-working, durable and a fierce competitor."

O'Kelly impressed the Blast in the 1990 College All-Star Showcase here. He would have been the Blast's first-round selection in the Major Soccer League draft that year had not the Tacoma Stars, picking just ahead of Baltimore, taken him.
