Terps pick up the pace, top Polish team, 111-75

COLLEGE PARK -- A year ago, the University of Maryland lost its opening exhibition game to the Australian National Team and Gary Williams called it progress.

Last night at Cole Field House, the Terrapins struggled to stop the Polish National Team in the first half of the season's opening exhibition and Williams called his players together for a little halftime chat.

"We never got into the flow," Williams said later. "We play harder in practice all the time. But we did a good job picking up our defense in the second half.

Williams obviously got his message across, and Maryland got into a flow that produced 62 second-half points as well as an easy 111-75 victory. Sophomore forward Keith Booth led the Terrapins with 30 points, while sophomore All-America center Joe Smith finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

While Maryland ran its four-point halftime lead to 20 in the first 6:19 of the second half, the Polish team ran out of gas and nearly out of frontcourt players.

With their opponents jet-lagged from their trip and foul-hampered -- all three front-court starters fouled out in 21 minutes or less -- the Terps made 25 of 38 second-half shots and went to the foul line 41 times, making 31 of their free throws.

Booth was about the only Maryland player who seemed to be in the flow from start to finish. Showing more range on his jump shot, and more comfort at the free throw line, Booth finished 10 of 18 from the floor (including one-of-one on threes) and, even more significantly, nine of 11 from the line.

Polish coach Eugenjusz Kijewski said that the time change was difficult for a team that was put together in recent weeks from a number of club teams. "It's 4 in the morning in Poland and we don't play basketball at that hour," he said through an interpreter.
