Loyola gains MAAC soccer final

Bill Wnek had two goals and an assist to give Loyola a 6-0 victory over visiting St. Peter's yesterday and a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament title game.

The win was Greyhounds coach Bill Sento's 200th. Loyola (14-4-2) will face Manhattan -- which defeated Siena, 3-2, -- tomorrow.

* Mount St. Mary's 5, Rider 1: Mark Southern scored twice and added an assist as visiting Mount St. Mary's (11-5-2) defeated Rider (10-5-1) to advance to the Northeast Conference tournament title game.

Mount St. Mary's will play host Robert Morris at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Women's soccer

* North Carolina 5, Maryland 0: Second-seeded North Carolina (20-1-1) outshot the Terrapins (7-10-3), 24-9 in the rout, as goalie Missy Price recorded a shutout in an ACC Tournament semifinal. Top-seeded Duke edged North Carolina State, 1-0.

Field hockey

* Harford Community College 2, Dean Junior College: In Herkimer, N.Y., Paula Beaudette (Rising Sun) and Pam Gauss (Fallston) scored within 45 seconds midway through the first half and top-seeded Harford (16-1) defeated Dean in the semifinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association field hockey tournament.

Harford, in its second final and first since 1983, will play third-seeded Becker College for the championship at noon today. Becker beat Herkimer, 3-1.

Men's basketball

* Converse 79, Loyola 73: Brian Smith scored 19 points and Drew Henderson added 15 to lead the Converse All-Stars over Loyola in an exhibition at Reitz Arena. Greyhounds forward B. J. Pendleton had a game-high 21 points.
