Glenelg surprises South River, 2-1

Carolyn Flowers scored the winning goal with 3:50 left in the second overtime to help Glenelg (10-4-1) to a 2-1 upset of No. 6 South River (11-1-2) in 1A-2A South region girls soccer game yesterday.

Monica Dodd scored the first goal for the Gladiators (10-4-1).

* Severn 2, Mount de Sales 1: Julie Tice scored the winner with 40 seconds left in the second overtime to lift Severn past visiting Mount de Sales in a Catholic League B division semifinal.

Monique Jennings added a goal and an assist for the Admirals. Khedra Conrad scored the Sailors' goal.

* Severna Park 4, Queen Anne's 1: Beth Ann Houck had a goal and two assists to move No. 7 Severna Park (13-2-1) past Queen Anne's in a Class 3A-4A South at Arundel.

Four players scored for the Falcons.

* Catoctin 3, Francis Scott Key 0: Jessie McIlrath scored in the opening minute and added two more to lead the Cougars (8-5-1) to a win over the Eagles (5-8-1) in a Class 1A-2A West region semifinal last night at Middletown High.

It was the third straight time the Cougars beat Key this season.

* Broadneck 6, Eleanor Roosevelt 1: Tara Jensen scored one minute into the game and led six individual scorers as visiting Broadneck (8-6-1) defeated Eleanor Roosevelt in Class 3A-4A South semifinal action. Jensen added two assists.


* Poolesville 1, Wilde Lake 0: Brian Thoms scored 1:13 into the second half to lift Poolesville (11-2-1) of Montgomery County past Wilde Lake (4-9-1) in a Class 1A semifinal at Francis Scott Key.

* Smithsburg 4, Francis Scott Key 1: The Leopards (9-4) used early second-half goals by Brad Willock and Ryan Lampton to break open a tight game and defeat host Francis Scott Key (7-6) in a Class 1A South semifinal.

* North Harford 6, Elkton 1: Mike Piccolo scored three goals and added an assist to help No. 4 Harford (14-0-1) over host Elkton in a 2A North Region semifinal.

* Perry Hall 4, Patterson 2: Brian Doherty had two goals and one assist and Chris Ude added one goal and one assist to lead the No. 8 Gators (13-1) past the host Clippers in a 4A North region semifinal game.

* C. Milton Wright 2, Bel Air 2: (C.M. Wright wins shootout 10-9): Matt Youngerman scored the winning goal in the shootout to help No. 14 C. Milton Wright (10-1-4) defeat Bel Air in a 3A North semifinal.

Cory Smith and Joe Davis scored for the Mustangs in regulation.

* Franklin 3, Dundalk 1: Jamie Glick, Gene Balbir and Marc Spurrier each scored goals to lead No. 15 Franklin (12-1) over host Dundalk (6-6) in a 3A North semifinal.

It was the Indians' 12th straight win since losing the first game of the season to Perry Hall.

* Loch Raven 3, Chesapeake-BC 0: Michael D'Angelo scored two goals to power Loch Raven (12-3) over host Chesapeake-BC in a 2A North Region semifinal. Senior Jeremy McDonough had two assists.

* Annapolis 2, Old Mill 0: Senior forward Ryan Sears scored twice in the first half to carry host Annapolis (7-6-1) past Old Mill (5-8-2) in a Class 4A East Region semifinal.

Sophomore Justin Daniel set up the first goal about seven minutes into the game with a lead pass to Sears on the left wing. Sears' second goal, less than a minute later, deflected off an Old Mill defender.

* South River 1, Southern-AA 0: John Tedder scored 1:34 into overtime to lead host South River (5-7-2) over Southern-AA (4-8-2). The Seahawks' Sean Finnelle made 10 saves.

* Sherwood 4, Westminster 1: Greg Simmonds scored two goals as host Sherwood (11-4) defeated Westminster (11-3-1) in a state Class 4A West region semifinal. Ryan Surber scored Westminster's goal.
