Officer loses fleeing man, recovers loaded pistol

November 03, 1994

A Western District police officer lost a drug suspect in a chase Tuesday afternoon but recovered a loaded .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun the man tossed into the grass as he ran, county police said.

Officer Thomas Middleton was on routine patrol in the 8400 block of Pioneer Drive about 5 p.m. when he approached two men standing in the back of an apartment complex. One of the men ran, leading the officer to believe that a drug deal had just been completed, police said.

Officer Middleton chased the man but lost him. He went back over the chase route, and a woman told him the suspect had just run past her house. Officer Middleton found the gun lying in the grass nearby. It had one round in the chamber and three in the magazine, police said.
