Man shoots self in hand while unloading gun

A Glen Burnie man was taken to Union Memorial Hospital yesterday after accidentally shooting himself in the hand, police said.

Michael John Springfield, 43, of the 100 block of Georgia Ave. N.E. was unloading his .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun about 1 a.m. so he could clean the gun. When he pulled back the sliding mechanism, it slipped and fired, police said.

The bullet struck Mr. Springfield in the left hand. County paramedics took him to Union Memorial, police said. He was listed in fair condition, police said.

Man arrested in girlfriend's beating

A Laurel man was arrested on assault and battery charges Monday morning in the beating of his girlfriend outside her Glen Burnie apartment, police said.

Du Pok No, 56, of the 100 block of Lauren Drive also was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly intoxication.

Mr. No's girlfriend, Pok Im Lee, 47, told police the beating started in her apartment shortly after 2 a.m. She said she ran out of the apartment and into the street, police said. Though she received a bloody nose, a swollen face and a cut on her left hand, the woman refused hospital treatment, police said.
