Unbeaten Frostburg rallies in 4th to tie Newport News, 27-27

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Quarterback Gil Telleria's 21-yard run with 8:33 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Frostburg State a 27-27 tie with Newport News Apprentice yesterday.

The visiting Bobcats (7-0-1), ranked fifth in Division III, are just two victories away from an undefeated season.

Newport News (4-3-1) led 20-13 at halftime, but after a scoreless third period Frostburg tied the game on Kermit Nored's 1-yard run with 14:56 to play.

Jermaine Bellamy, who rushed for 84 yards on 19 carries, scored on a 7-yard run to give Newport News its last lead of the game at 27-20.

Telleria then directed a six-play, 65-yard drive that ended with his touchdown run.

Brian Goodger's point-after tied the game.

Telleria rushed for 107 yards. He completed seven passes for 170 yards and one touchdown.

Coming in, the Bobcats' defense was allowing 12 points per game.

Fayetteville St. 28, Bowie 8

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Robert Harrington threw two touchdown passes and ran for another to lead host Fayetteville State (4-4-1, 4-3) past Bowie State (2-6, 2-6) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game.

Clifton Davis, the third-leading rusher in the CIAA, gave the Broncos a 6-0 lead on a 2-yard run at the 9:00 mark of the first period.

Davis, who rushed 24 times for 102 yards and one touchdown, also caught a 9-yard scoring pass from Harrington to put Fayetteville up 28-0 at the start of the third quarter.

The Bulldogs' Kenley Bullard blocked a punt late in the period, but the Broncos recovered in the end zone for a safety.

With 6:01 left in the game, Bowie's Craig Mitchell ran in from 1 yard out to account for the final margin.

Mike Gordon led the Bulldogs' offense with eight catches for 95 yards.

Albany St. 44, Salisbury St. 20


ALBANY, N.Y. -- Albany State ran up 471 yards in total offense and got two touchdown runs from Victor Freeman and Jeremy Kachejian as it defeated visiting Salisbury State (2-5).

Albany (3-4) led 20-7 at halftime on a 1-yard run by Freeman, a 41-yard punt return by Andy Shein, and a 49-yard run by Otis Bellamy.

The Sea Gulls' Byron Pugh rushed 17 times for 98 yards and one touchdown.

Last week, Pugh tied a school single-game record with six touchdowns on 22 carries. His touchdown yesterday, a 30-yard run with 13:37 to play, brought Salisbury within 34-20.

But Kachejian ended a five-play, 27-yard drive with a 1-yard run and Jason Skowronek kicked a 22-yard field goal to end a potential comeback.
