HAGERSTOWN -- After 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes, North Carroll's Class 1A-2A West region playoff opener against North Hagerstown came down to penalty kicks.

That's when Kristen Finch's goal gave the Panthers a clinching 3-1 win in the penalty kicks and a 5-4 win over the Hubs at South Hagerstown Stadium.

Chiara Deiaco and Jen Rongione also scored in the penalty-kick session for the Panthers, while goalie Teresa Mays turned back three shots.

The Panthers (5-8) appeared to be breezing along with a 3-0 lead early in the second half when things got interesting.

That's when the eighth-seeded Hubs (6-7) rallied with three straight goals -- the last two a minute apart with eight minutes left -- to tie the score at 3.

It was only the beginning. The Panthers, seeded ninth, answered on a goal by Christina Crouse with six minutes left, only to have Christy Wentz score her third goal of the night moments later to send the game into overtime.

North Carroll appeared to be in control after Finch scored and Lisa McCulley added her second of the night five minutes apart with 22 minutes left.

Even after Wentz scored with 18:34 left, finally beating Mays along the near post, the Panthers still appeared to be in good shape.

The Hubs were not about to quit and found themselves right back in the game with Katie Beard and Wentz finding the net in a hurry to get even at 3.

Both teams had a number of chances in a first half in which North Carroll took a 1-0 lead on a McCulley goal midway through.

The sophomore forward got to a loose ball with traffic in front of the North Hagerstown net and beat goalie Marisa Adkins.

Some of the Hubs' best chances came late in the half.

Junior forward Denise Spindle hit the post with a header off a corner with seven minutes remaining in the half. Just over a minute later, Beard got free along the right side but had her shot blocked by fullback Amber Fleming.
