Flags at half-staff for William McElroy

October 28, 1994

Sykesville is flying flags at half-staff this week in honor of William Ray McElroy, a retiree who had served the town for 45 years.

Mr. McElroy, known as "Mr. Mac," died Oct. 11. He was 88.

From 1939 to 1970, Mr. McElroy was the town chief of police. He then worked for 14 more years as supervisor of the Public Works Department.

A proclamation, signed by the mayor and Town Council, says Mr. McElroy "gave countless measures of his time, energy and resources toward the improvement of Sykesville, and he lived an outstanding life of citizenship and public service during his years of residence."

Two years ago, the town dedicated the municipal parking lot on Oklahoma Avenue as the McElroy Town Parking Lot in recognition of his outstanding service, Mayor Jonathan S. Herman said.

* Sykesville: Engines from Sykesville and Gamber were dispatched to investigate a fire alarm in a building in the 1500 block of Liberty Road at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday. Units were out for 23 minutes.
