Why 3 races in 2 days? Gilbert had her reasons

RUNNING

There's a method to Judith Gilbert's madness.

Two weekends ago, when she ran three races in two days, it wasn't just to run back-to-back-to-back races.

"I find it hard to motivate myself to run long distances by myself; that's why I did the Bachman Valley Half-Marathon," Gilbert, 51, says about her 1-hour, 51-minute, 44-second finish in Carroll County.

And how about the two on Saturday?

"I was in the Women's Distance Festival and I had to get my fourth in," Gilbert says about participation in the Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club's 5K at Belcamp, in which she finished fifth in 24:17. "And since I was up there in Harford County, I decided to stay and do the Harford Invitational since I like cross country."

In that 5K, she was first female masters in 26:32.

Since she was preparing for Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, it also was a good way to get race experience.

That experience is not without precedent for Gilbert.

In early July -- in preparation for that month's San Francisco Marathon -- she ran the Howard County Striders' Women's Distance Festival 5K on Friday, the Spirit of Gettysburg the following day and the Westminster Road Runners Club's Women's Distance Festival 5K on Sunday.

"My training regimen is real hodgepodge," says Gilbert, who finished the Marine Corps in 4:34. "I do maybe 25 miles a week.

"I finished San Francisco strong and I finished happy and I thought, 'Wow, I can do the Marine Corps now.' "

She says that's not too bad for someone who took up running only five years ago.

"I didn't run in high school," Gilbert says. "We were still ladies wearing gloves and hats back then. I wish I had. I might have been better."
