Gettysburg's Geoff Pickett (John Carroll) seems to save his best shots for critical soccer situations.

The sophomore forward has four goals, including the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Susquehanna and the overtime goal that beat Swarthmore, 3-2.

* Sophomore Amity Torbit (John Carroll) had a career-high three assists as Barry posted its sixth straight shutout in an 8-0 romp past West Florida. In 12 games, Torbit has five goals and seven assists.

Volleyball

Laura Cook (Chesapeake, Baltimore County) was named Big Ten Player of the Week after helping No. 3 Penn State post its eighth straight victory and raise its record to 18-1.

* Duquesne senior Stacey Gilligan (Glen Burnie) is sixth in the Atlantic 10 in kills with a 3.13 average after collecting 24 in the last two matches.

* Carlyn Cangiano (Centennial), a 6-foot freshman, and Abby Burk (Towson), a 5-10 sophomore, are averaging 2.8 and 2.4 kills, respectively, for Delaware.

* Staci Winters (Smithsburg, Hagerstown JC) had 26 kills in two East Carolina matches and continues to rank among the Colonial Athletic Association leaders in hitting percentage (.308).

Tennis

Senior Julia Diaz (McDonogh) helped top-seeded Bucknell capture the Patriot League title for the second time in three years. She teamed with Kristina Lutter to win No. 1 doubles (raising their record to 14-1) and was runner-up in No. 1 singles, raising her record to 8-5.

Field hockey

Paige Fernau (Elkton) was one of West Chester's defensive stalwarts until she sprained a wrist against New Hampshire. She is back in the lineup after missing two games.

* Liz Goodall (Kent County) scored her fourth goal of the season in the Towson State game, and leads Bucknell in scoring with 12 points on four goals and four assists.

Football

Shippensburg linebacker Chris Willingham (Atholton) had a strong performance in a 31-21 win over Clarion with 14 tackles, five solo, and a pass breakup. For the season, he has 99 tackles, including five for 9 yards in losses, and three sacks, a fumble recovery and three pass breakups.

* Sophomore linebacker Brad Fordyce (C. Milton Wright) had 12 tackles in Springfield's 34-7 win over Southern Connecticut.

* In Liberty's 27-19 victory over Southwest Missouri State, freshman running back Lawrence Worthington (Edgewood) had a touchdown and linebacker Damon Bomar (Edgewood) returned a fumble 36 yards and lateraled to a teammate, who ran for the score.

Senior place-kicker Daniel Whitehead (Damascus) collected nine points against Southwest Missouri, raising his career total to 196 and enabling him to supplant Charles McCray as Liberty's all-time leader.

Et cetera

Freshmen Dave Krantz (Howard) and Nick Hunter (Loyola) already are producing for Dickinson in cross country. Krantz has a second and a sixth and Hunter has a fifth. . . . Dickinson sophomore Ned Bourne (Gilman), a reserve place-kicker, is 1-for-2 in extra points. . . . William and Mary cross country also has two locals -- freshman Alicia Adams (Glenelg), who finished in the top 10 in a recent four-team meet, and senior Pat Rodrigues (Centennial), who led the charge that gave W&M a tie with Virginia Tech in the men's meet. . . . Sophomore Chris Bembenek (South River) is East Carolina's leading backstroker and Allison Lipp (Franklin), also a sophomore, adds strength in the distance and middle distance events for the women's team.
