Annapolis Club's Fall Series closes with fleets of winners

SAILING

October 23, 1994|By NANCY NOYES

Annapolis Yacht Club's Fall Series came to a close last weekend after three weeks of racing for two substantial fleets.

Competing on Saturdays in a fleet of 99 were the smaller cruising one designs along with the MORC and PHRF C sailors. On Sundays, IMS I reappeared, joining two other racing/cruising IMS splits and the four PHRF A and B divisions that took to the course in a 112-boat group.

Courses were windward-leeward in all cases, except the second Sunday when an Olympic course was used for the big boats. On that day, the PHRF A-0 and IMS I sailors used a longer course than the rest of their PHRF and IMS fleets, so in the series scoring for IMS overall and PHRF A/B overall, this race was discounted in fleet standings for that day. Nevertheless, two crews posted outstanding class finishes for the series, racking up three bullets.

In IMS I, victory went to Peter and Ian Gordon and their team on Gaucho, and similar results were turned in for the PHRF B class by John White and his crew on his unnamed B-25, new to him this year.

In the Saturday fleet, no one was able to turn in so dominating a group of finishes. Several sailors posted two aces in the three-race series, including the MORC-winning Lewis/Salvesen team on Mirage, PHRF C winner Rick Baucom and crew on Sails Call, and Bruce Rankin and his team on Lingin in Alberg 30s.

In the more populous J/30 and J/24 classes, results were more mixed up, and series winners did not win any single races.

The big overall champions among the Sunday sailors were Jim Michie and his team aboard WOFTAM in the 66-boat PHRF A/B fleet, and the Gordons' Gaucho crew in the 24-boat IMS fleet.
