Julie Finglass

School: Hammond High School

Hometown: Columbia

Age: 17

Julie holds a straight-A average while juggling extracurricular activities and a demanding hobby. She serves as senior class treasurer and belongs to the National Honor Society. She was recently named a Maryland Distinguished Scholar semifinalist.

During high school, she played junior varsity and varsity volleyball and helped manage the boys' lacrosse team. She was a Student Government Association executive board member, a Spanish Club member and a class president. She was a voting delegate to the Maryland Association of Student Councils' legislative sessions in 1993 and 1994.

Outside of school, she has volunteered for the Columbia Festival of the Arts, Patuxent Valley Middle School and American Red Cross blood drives.

Julie has spent nearly 10 years studying dance. She has been a top finisher at several regional and national dance competitions in Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and New York. She recently was one of 50 dancers selected from a nationwide search to perform at Universal Studios theme park in Orlando, Fla.

Plans: She's looking for a college with a strong dance program but is also interested in studying business or education.

Her comments: "It's fun to get involved in school," she said. "Because you're involved, you learn how to manage your time."

One of her top role models is her mother, Jean, a busy bookkeeper who has found time to volunteer as Hammond's booster club president.

"If she can do it, then I can go to school and I can do it, too," Julie says.
