The Anne Arundel County Professional Firefighters, the union that represents the county's firefighters and paramedics, has endorsed Theodore J. Sophocleus for county executive.
The firefighters union endorsed County Executive Robert R. Neall four years ago, a move they probably would not have repeated if Mr. Neall had run for re-election. Mr. Neall and the firefighters have clashed bitterly the past year over changes in the county's health care system that the union said went against their contract. Despite winning two binding arbitration awards, the union gave up the victories when Mr. Neall canceled a 6 percent pay raise he granted to all other county workers who accepted the entire health package.
In selecting Mr. Sophocleus, the firefighters back a candidate with a solid record of support for organized labor.
The union also endorsed:
* County Council, District 1: George F. Bachman;
* County Council, District 2: James "Ed" DeGrange;
* County Council, District 3: Carl G. "Dutch" Holland;
* County Council, District 4: Bert L. Rice;
* County Council, District 5: No Endorsement
* County Council, District 6: Melinda M. Hamilton;
* County Council, District 7: John J. Klocko III;
* State's Attorney: Frank R. Weathersbee;
* Sheriff: George F. Johnson IV.
The county's Republican State Central Committee is inviting GOP voters from District 27B to apply to join the party's central governing body.
County voters in District 27B -- which includes most of northern Calvert County and the southern tip of Anne Arundel -- did not get to vote in the primary election for central committee because of an omission on the ballot.
Interested registered Republicans should send their resumes to Chairwoman Helen Fister, 2747 Rutland Road, Davidsonville 21035.
