Newman/Haas IndyCar -- Named Paul Tracy and Michael Andretti as the new drivers for its racing team, replacing Nigel Mansell and Mario Andretti.

Baseball

Atlanta Braves -- Declined to exercise their 1995 option on 3B Terry Pendleton.

Boston Red Sox -- Named Kevin Kennedy manager.

Chicago Cubs -- Fired Syd Thrift, assistant general manager. Announced the retirement of IF Tommy Shields. Announced P Blaise Ilsley, P Rafael Novoa, IF Todd Haney and C Mike Maksudian refused outright assignments to Iowa and chose free agency. Re-signed minor-league free agents P Isidro Marquez, P Joey Vierra, IF Paul Gonzalez, IF Dave Milstien, OF Dann Howitt, OF Javier Ortiz and OF Jerry Wolak.

Chicago White Sox -- Exercised their 1995 options on P Atlee Hammaker and C Mike LaValliere. Placed P Paul Assenmacher and P Dennis Cook on waivers for the purpose of giving them their unconditional release.

Cleveland Indians -- Claimed P Dennis Cook off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

Kansas City Royals -- Named Jeff Cox third base coach. Announced Bruce Kison will return as pitching coach.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Named former Oriole John Shelby manager and Luis Tiant pitching coach for Double-A San Antonio. Exercised their 1995 option on IF Jeff Treadway. Declined to exercise their 1995 option on P Kevin Gross.

New York Mets -- Declined to exercise their 1995 option on OF Kevin McReynolds.

Oakland Athletics -- Agreed to terms with Tony La Russa, manager, on a three-year contract extension through 1997.

Philadelphia Phillies -- Exercised their 1995 option on OF Jim Eisenreich. Declined to exercise their 1995 options on P Norm Charlton, P Doug Jones and OF Pete Incaviglia. Signed former Orioles P Brian DuBois, P Paul Fletcher, P Chuck Ricci, P Dennis Springer, IF Shawn Gilbert and IF Charlie Montoyo to minor-league contracts.

San Diego Padres -- Signed former Oriole Merv Rettenmund, hitting coach, to a two-year contract with an option for a third.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Named Omar Malave manager, Reggie Cleveland pitching coach and Scott Miller coach of Single-A Hagerstown.

North Texas -- Announced it has accepted an invitation to become a member of the Big West Conference, effective July 1996.
