Atlanta Braves -- Purchased the contracts of C Eddie Perez and P Terry Clark from Triple-A Richmond.

Boston Red Sox -- Assigned P Jose Melendez and former Orioles P Todd Frohwirth outright to Triple-A Pawtucket. Announced that IF Scott Fletcher and IF Greg Litton refused assignment to Triple-A and chose free agency. Added P Keith Shepherd and OF Pat Lennon to the 40-man roster.

Cincinnati Reds -- Extended the contract of GM Jim Bowden five years through 1999. Claimed OF Gary Mota off waivers from the Houston Astros.

Colorado Rockies -- Waived P Mike Harkey, P Scott Fredrickson, C Jim Czajkowski, C Danny Sheaffer, OF Trenidad Hubbard and IF Nelson Liriano. Agreed to terms with scouts Jack Bloomfield, Mel Nelson, Jim Fanning and ex-Oriole Pat Dobson.

Florida Marlins -- Named Rick Williams bullpen coach.

Minnesota Twins -- Announced that they would lay off 23 workers, nearly half their front-office staff, next week.

New York Yankees -- Exercised their 1995 option on P Steve Howe, agreeing to pay him $2.3 million.

Oakland Athletics -- IF Lance Blankenship and IF Steve Sax refused outright assignments and chose free agency.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Claimed IF Nelson Liriano (.255 in 87 games) off waivers from the Rockies.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Named Walt Jocketty GM.

San Francisco Giants -- OF Dave Martinez refused an outright assignment and chose free agency.

Seattle Mariners -- Claimed OF Alex Diaz (.251 in 79 games) off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers.

Texas Rangers -- P Tim Leary refused an outright assignment and chose free agency. Waived OF Rob Ducey.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Named Gord Ash GM and vice president. Announced that IF Darnell Coles refused an outright assignment and chose free agency. Re-instated P Duane Ward and P Paul Menhart from the 60-day DL to the 40-man roster.

Palm Springs Suns (Western Baseball League) -- Team in new, independent league named former Oriole Lee Lacy hitting coach.

Basketball

Golden State Warriors -- Waived F Cornel Parker.

Los Angeles Clippers -- Signed G-F Eric Piatkowski, the 15th selection in the NBA draft, to a multi-year contract.

Miami Heat -- Waived G Jerome Harmon.

Colleges

Big Ten -- Signed a six-year contract extension that will allow the conference co-champion or runner-up to play in the Florida Citrus Bowl against an SEC team.

Bethune-Cookman -- Unveiled a plan to maintain its NCAA Division I-AA football status, ending speculation that a $750,000 deficit would force the school to drop the sport.

Michigan State -- Signed Tom Izzo to a five-year contract to take over as basketball coach when Jud Heathcote retires after this season. Izzo, in his fifth season as associate head coach, was named to succeed Heathcote on April 9, 1993.

Texas -- Suspended WR Lovell Pinkney, WR Mike Adams, WR Wane McGarity, LB Jonathan Hickerson, LB Dwight Kirkpatrick, RB Darrell Wilson and DB Shunte Hall indefinitely after unrelated breaches of conduct.

Football

CFLs -- Released CB Kwame Smith.

British Columbia Lions (CFL) -- Traded K Paul McCallum to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Activated DB Sean Foudy from the injured list. Placed DT Glen Scrivner, DT Doug Petersen, RB Tony Jackson, DB Kelly Sims and DB Michael Allen on the injured list. Activated former Washington Redskins CB Barry Wilburn from the suspended list. Placed DB Tony Collier on the reserve list.

Calgary Stampeders (CFL) -- Placed CB Damon Smith on the injured list.

Edmonton Eskimos (CFL) -- Placed DB Oscar Giles and DB Damion Lyons on the reserve list.

Las Vegas Posse (CFL) -- Transferred OL Tom Backes and OL Ben Jefferson (Maryland) to the injured list. Activated OL Russ McCullough, OL Ron Shipley and DB Calvin Nicholson from the injured list. Moved DL Jason Medlock to the practice roster. Suspended DB James Bullock. Re-signed LB Greg Tucker.

Ottawa Rough Riders (CFL) -- Acquired OL Paul Yatkowski from the Saskatchewan Roughriders for two 1995 college draft selections.

Shreveport Pirates (CFL) -- Placed DT Keith Browner, TE Ron Haliburton and G Jason Kuipersend on the injured list.

Toronto Argonauts (CFL) -- Acquired the rights to DB Paul Clatney from Ottawa. Released WR Eric Drage, DB Ousmane Bary and Dexter Seigler.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL) -- Activated RB Keith Woodside from the suspended list and transferred him to the injured list. Placed WR Nathaniel Bolton, WR Alfred Jackson, LB Charles Clemons, LB Kelvin Smith, DB Kim Phillips and DB Norris Thomas on the injured list.

Hockey

NHL -- Announced that a request by the Ottawa Senators to return C Alexandre Daigle to QMJHL Victoriaville remains under review.

New Jersey Devils -- Sent D Jason Smith on loan to AHL Albany.

L Philadelphia Flyers -- Assigned F Phil Crowe to AHL Hershey.

Tampa Bay Lightning -- Reassigned F Marian Kacir from IHL Atlanta to IHL Chicago.

Vancouver Canucks -- Announced that they won't stand in RW Pavel Bure's way if he wants to play in Europe during the NHL lockout.
