Md. women top Loyola, 3-0, in soccer

Stefanie Magro and Carol Finch scored second-half goals to break open a close game and propel Maryland to a 3-0 victory over Loyola in a women's soccer game yesterday.

* Goucher 3, Catholic 1: Nicole Walker, Kristen Carey and Beth Shew each scored a goal to lead visiting Goucher College (9-1-2) past Catholic (4-7).

Men's soccer

* Loyola 2, Howard 0: Zach Thornton tied a school record with his eighth consecutive shutout and Brian Geraghty and Ben Tuffnell each scored a goal, leading Loyola (11-2-2) past visiting Howard (5-6).

* James Madison 6, Towson State 0: Patrick McSorley scored two goals and had one assist to lead James Madison (11-1) over host Towson State (6-7).

* Johns Hopkins 1, Western Maryland 0: Rob Layton scored with

6:05 remaining in the first half and Johns Hopkins (8-2-3, 4-1-1) beat host Western Maryland (3-10-1, 0-6). Craig Greenwald (five saves) got his fourth shutout.

* Goucher 3, Catholic 1: Chris Walton scored two goals and Percy Moore had one to lead Goucher College (7-7-1) over host Catholic (4-6).

Field hockey

* Towson State 4, Richmond 0: Amy Gorecki scored a goal and had an assist for host Towson State (4-7).
