Clapper running this race from director's position

RUNNING

October 11, 1994|By Michael Reeb | Michael Reeb,Sun Staff Writer

Joe Wasserman, everyone's favorite Howard County Strider, says of Gerry Clapper's efforts as race director of the club's inaugural Run through the Grapevine 8K cross country race: "It's good to see an elite runner put some time and effort into volunteer duties as a race director."

Nadia Wasserman, Joe's wife and president of the Striders, seconds that emotion: "He came to a board meeting with the idea. He came back with the place, the idea, and he followed through on it. It's very unusual to see an elite runner go to these lengths."

Clapper, of course, is an elite runner. A three-time winner of the Annapolis Ten-Mile Run, he is in training for the Marine Corps Marathon, in which he will try to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.

But it is as coach, volunteer and race director that Clapper distinguishes himself.

The reason for his latest effort?

"I wanted to gear it toward the adults -- how after you get out of college, team cross country is pretty nonexistent," Clapper said. "I geared it toward team stuff."

Individual runners are welcome, but prizes are geared toward teams -- on which up to six runners may participate and four are counted.

The run will be held at Linganore Wine Cellars in Mount Airy on Nov. 6, beginning at 10 a.m. For information, call (410) 992-5800.
