Only a 15-foot birdie putt by Carl Greener on the final green saved the Golf Association of Philadelphia from a first-day shutout, but the 5 1/2 - 1/2 lead by the Middle Atlantic Golf Association at Caves Valley Golf Club yesterday was still unprecedented in the nearly 50-year history of the Mason-Dixon matches.

There will be 12 singles matches in this morning's program.

The 12-man sides included two seniors (Perky Cullinane-Bob Bonnell were 1-up winners) and one junior (Greener for Philadelphia and G. W. Cable for the Middle Atlantic).

Aside from the Greener-William McGuiness half with Cable-Pat Tallent (they started on No. 10, and Greener's putt on the ninth green was straight in from below and left of the cup), and the seniors pairing, one other match went to the last hole in the betterball format.

From 3 down after four holes, Shane Patterson-Buddy Peoples rallied against Michael Gregor-James Kania and Patterson's winning par at the 17th pushed the MAGA ahead 1-up. The two sides halved the 18th in birdies.

No more than two holes separated Joel Kaye-Barry McCarty (MA) and Michael Domenick-Chet Walsh, but the former team won it, 2 and 1, with a par at the sixth and a McCarty birdie at the seventh.

For the MA seniors, 3-up after 10 holes, Bonnell coaxed in a six-foot downhill putt for a par at the ninth green to preserve a 1-up decision.

In the other two pairings, Chuck Friedman-Adrian Druzgala defeated Michael Tash-Robin McCool, 2 and 1; and Marty West III and Bob Bilobo took a 4-and-3 win over Buddy Marucci-David Brookerson.

Chuck Friedman-Adrian Druzgals (MA) def. Michael Tash-Robin McCool, 2 and 1; Shane Patterson-Buddy Peoples (MA) def. Michael Gregor-James Kania, 2 and 1; Bob Bilbo-Marty West III (MA) def. Buddy Marucci-David Brookerson, 4 and 3.

G.W. Cable-Pat Tallent (MA) split with Carl Greener-William McGuiness; Joel Kaye-Barry McCarty (MA) def. Michael Domenick-Chet Walsh, 2 and 1; Bob Bonnell- Perky Cullinane (MA) def. Fred Tyler-Jay Howson, 1 up.
