DENTON -- Defending champion and No. 6 Severna Park came to the eighth annual Bulldog Classic Volleyball Tournament at North Caroline High School with different expectations than last year's team.

"The goal is never to win," said Falcons' coach Tim Dunbar. "The goal is to play as well as you can play. Last year for us, that was to be better than everybody else because we had such a strong team. This year, it's to play well, and I think we did that."

Northern of Calvert County defeated the Falcons, 15-2, 15-11, in the semifinals. The Patriots (13-0) went on to beat No. 1 Centennial, 8-15, 15-10, 15-4, for the title.

The Falcons (12-2) beat No. 4 Mount Hebron, 15-13, 15-11, in preliminary pool play. They also swept Western and North East and split with Richard Montgomery.

In the first game of the semifinal, the Falcons had trouble returning serves. In the second game, they pulled within 12-10 on the longest rally of the match. But the Falcons could not maintain the momentum, and Northern got a point on its next two serves to pull ahead, 14-10.
