Community service explained to parents

Parents of children in the Chesapeake High School feeder system are invited to attend a meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the high school. Dennis Younger, director of curriculum for the county schools, will explain the service learning requirement.

State school officials have added service learning -- voluntary community service -- as a requirement for graduation.

County schools are beginning service learning programs in sixth grade so a student will have completed the requirement by the time he finishes 10th grade.

"But," explained Chesapeake Principal Harry Calender, "there is still some confusion about service learning in parents' minds."

The Pasadena Sport Fishing Group will have its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Orchard Beach fire hall on Solley Road.

"If you've had trouble catching rockfish, don't miss this meeting," said George Bentz, PSG spokesman.

Bud Hein, from Fishbones Bait & Tackle (formerly Daubert's), will present a program on the specialized technique of "feather gigging" to land those wily rockfish.

The meeting is open to the public. No membership fees or dues are charged. Tickets for door prizes and a 50/50 raffle will be on sale. An auction of used boat and fishing tackle will be conducted after the meeting.

Food and refreshments will be on sold to benefit the Orchard Beach Volunteer Fire Company.

Enjoy a home-cooked lunch and an afternoon of games at the annual fall bingo luncheon sponsored by the Chesapeake Women's Club Wednesday at Kurtz's Beach.

The doors will open at 11 a.m. with lunch served at noon.

Admission is $5 per person and includes the buffet luncheon and one bingo card. Additional cards will be on sale.

Proceeds from the event will benefit CWC community outreach programs.

The PTO of Lake Shore Elementary School has scheduled a covered dish dinner from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the school, 4531 Mountain Road.

Bring a main dish to feed your family and a dish to share. Utensils and refreshments will be provided.

After dinner, Rita Lowman, president of the Council of PTAs will present a program on the advantages and responsibilities of PTA membership. A question-and-answer period will follow.

Free child care will be available starting at 7 p.m.

If you're faced with the unenviable task of financing your child's trip down the cash-consuming halls of higher education, you might want to learn more about financial aid at a workshop at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Chesapeake High School student center.

Mark Lindenmeyer, director of financial aid at Loyola College, will be the guest speaker. He will be discussing where to look and how to apply for financial aid and offer tips on filling out financial aid forms. A question-and-answer period will follow the program.

The free workshop, sponsored by the CHS guidance department, is open to parents and students.

The Chesapeake Cluster of PTAs and PTOs will present "Parents and Children Talking," a dinner and workshop from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 20 at Chesapeake High School.

The guest speaker will be school board member Carlesa Finney.

Parents and Children Talking (PACT) is sponsored by the Governor's Council on Adolescent Pregnancy. It is a community program that encourages parents to talk openly with their children about human sexuality issues.

Middle school and high school students are encouraged to attend with their parents.

The workshop is free but there will be a small charge for dinner.

The Stoney Creek Democratic Club, 8123 Fort Smallwood Road, is planning its second Sunday party from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 9.

The cost is $7 per person and includes a hot dinner platter, snacks, beer and setups. Music will be provided by Al Baitch.

Downs Park is issuing a final call for volunteers to help at its BTC annual Halloween Haunted Trail and Fall Craft Fair both scheduled for Oct. 29 at the park.

The craft fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the haunted trail hours from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Helpers are needed for children's games, face painting, loading and unloading crafter's wares, and scarecrow builders during the fair.

Ghosts, ghouls and goblins are needed for the trail as well as face painters and crowd control helpers.

If you're pulling out those old winter clothes and find they don't fit or are just too tattered to make it through another season, consider donating them to Downs Park for its scarecrow stuffing booth at the fair.

Ranger Bill Offutt has put out a request for ratty, old blue jeans, flannel shirts and snagged panty hose. "Worn-out knees and holes are great; scarecrows don't care," he said.
