Winfield man, 32, killed when car runs off road

A 32-year-old Winfield man was killed less than two miles from his home early yesterday when the car he was driving ran off Salem Bottom Road and struck a tree.

Michael Patrick Tracey, who lived in the 3800 block of Salem Bottom Road, was pronounced dead at Carroll County General Hospital. His body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Baltimore for an autopsy, according to state police.

Tfc. Van Stitcher, the investigating officer, said speed and alcohol appeared to have contributed to the crash, which occurred at 12:10 a.m.

Mr. Tracey was driving west on Salem Bottom Road near Bloom Road when his 1987 Pontiac Trans Am crossed the center line, went off the left shoulder and hit the tree.

Trooper Van Stitcher said Mr. Tracey was not wearing a seat belt.


* Mount Airy: Firefighters from the Mount Airy station were dispatched to investigate a fire alarm sounding in the 2500 block of Daisy Drive in Howard County at 6:55 a.m. Wednesday. They were out for 18 minutes.
