Church wins '94 Ecumenical Award

The Westminster Church of the Brethren has received the national 1994 Ecumenical Award of the Church of the Brethren.

The Rev. Ronald Petry, Mid-Atlantic district executive, presented the award Sept. 11 to Emma Gosnell, chairman of the Witness Commission, and Lisa Blevins, chairman of the Nurture Commission, on behalf of the church.

The award recognized the congregation for its involvement in interchurch activities such as Loaves and Fishes, Shepherd's Staff, Timber Ridge Hope Inc., Cooperative Child Care, Carroll County Citizens for Racial Equality, joint Vacation Bible School, shared worship, senior citizen fellowship, and its sister church relationship with the First Church of Mision Christiana in Managua, Nicaragua.

Accountant's office allowed in house

The Carroll County Board of Zoning Appeals has given a Westminster couple permission to open an accountant's office in a house at 423 E. Main St.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael E. Thackston of 419 Malcolm Drive, Westminster, plan to improve the building, which will benefit the neighborhood, the board wrote in its decision this week.

POLICE

* Westminster: A Sycamore Street resident reported someone punctured two tires on his car while it was near his house Monday. He estimated the damage at $180.

A official of Mack Homes told police someone broke two windows of a house under construction on Mulligan Lane Monday. The damage is estimated at $170.

FIRE

* Westminster: Firefighters from the Westminster station responded to an auto fire on Littlestown Pike at 8:31 p.m. Tuesday. They were out for 35 minutes.

Westminster firefighters were called to extinguish a trash container fire on Pennsylvania Avenue at 5:53 p.m. Tuesday. They were out for 35 minutes.
