Jason Masters of Hammond and Andrea Bedingfield of Glenelg recorded individual triumphs in the MPSSAA District 5 golf tournament yesterday at Bear Creek Golf Club in Westminster. Masters topped a field of 119 boys with a 5-over-par 76 and Bedingfield led 12 girls with an 86.

With 13 Class 3A-4A teams, the district, made up of teams from Anne Arundel, Carroll, Harford, and Howard counties, was able to qualify three teams for the state tournament, Oct. 20-21, at the University of Maryland GC in College Park.

Severna Park won the team title (four lowest scores) with 331, followed by Arundel at 350. Annapolis won a playoff for the final berth, beating Centennial on the second hole of sudden death, after they had tied at 353.

Among the 11 Class 1A-2A teams, Glenelg (360) was the only qualifier.

Aside from the members of qualifying teams, seven boys who shot 85 or better qualified on an individual basis. Among them were Matt Pilcher and Jonathan Smith of Bel Air with 81s. Bel Air had the best team score of the nine Harford entries, 373. From Carroll, Westminster finished at 365 and Liberty at 417.

For the girls, five who had better than 110 also qualified. They included Katie Hale of North Harford.
