Jason Masters of Hammond and Andrea Bedingfield of Glenelg recorded individual triumphs in the MPSSAA District 5 golf tournament yesterday at Bear Creek Golf Club in Westminster. Masters shot a 5-over-par 76 and Bedingfield an 86.

With 13 Class 3A-4A teams, the district, made up of teams from Anne Arundel, Carroll, Harford, and Howard counties, was able to qualify three teams for the state tournament, Oct. 20-21, at the University of Maryland GC in College Park.

Severna Park won the team title (four lowest scores) with 331, followed by Arundel at 350. Annapolis won a playoff for the final berth, beating Centennial on the second hole of sudden death, after they had tied at 353.

Among the 11 Class 1A-2A teams, Glenelg (360) was the only qualifier.

Seven boys who shot 85 or better qualified individually, as did five girls who shot better than 110.

Masters, a junior, beat runner-up Ryan Thompson of Severna Park and Jarret Ohm of Old Mill by two shots. Ohm's 78 was a career best. Bedingfield, a senior who qualified for her fourth consecutive state tournament, beat Jaclyn Surles of Old Mill by 13 strokes.
