POLICE

* Sykesville: Someone stole a new heat pump, valued at $1,050, from a house under construction in the 1200 block of Cimarron Ridge Court between Sept. 28 and Sept. 30, according to an official of the construction company, Grayson Homes of Ellicott City.

FIRE

* Gamber: Engines from Gamber, Sykesville, Winfield and Reese were dispatched to an apartment fire on Poole Road at 12:21 p.m. yesterday. Units were out for 20 minutes.

* Sykesville: Engines from Sykesville, Gamber and Howard County were dispatched to a building in the 7400 block of Buttercup Road, on the property of Springfield Hospital, to investigate a fire alarm sounding at 2:16 a.m. yesterday. The first firefighters found no fire, but remained at the site for an hour. At 4:15 a.m. the alarm again went off, and the same engines responded. They were out for 28 minutes on the second call.
