VOLUNTEER WORK: Mr. Jones has been a volunteer at the Crofton Convalescent Center, where he celebrated his 70th birthday Wednesday with the help of friends, patients and staff, for about eight years.

ABOUT THE VOLUNTEER: A career soldier, Mr. Jones became familiar with Anne Arundel County after he was stationed at Fort Meade for several tours of duty. The native of Petersburg, Va., retired from the Army in 1969 after 30 years of service, during which he won a Bronze Star for bravery in Vietnam and the Army Commendation Medal.

He has lived at Four Seasons since he retired and began helping out at the center when his sister became a resident in 1986. Married for 45 years, he has two children and three grandchildren.

VOLUNTEER'S COMMENT: "It's a great facility [Crofton Convalescent Center]. They all treat me so nice. I do anything I can do to help the nurses and the aides.

"They wanted to put me on the payroll, but I declined because I'm helping people that need help. The man upstairs will take care of me.

"Helping people is just in my blood."

FRIENDS' COMMENT: Alberta and Stan Baker, Mr. Jones' neighbors for 20 years, wrote that "helpful hands and smiling face have been a constant source of inspiration as he volunteered almost daily at the Crofton Convalescent Center. His assistance with the many residents has been invaluable."

Diane Kouns, activities director at the center, refers to Mr. Jones as "the captain or maitre d' of the dinning room."

"He would get everybody together, he knew where they sat, he'd get the trays. He ran the show."
