Paul Smith, last year's interim basketball coach at Dunbar, was named Tuesday to serve as coach for at least another year.

"This isn't an interim position, this is for the regular varsity basketball coach's position. We evaluate our coaches every year," Principal Charlotte Brown said yesterday.

"Paul took us to the [2A] state championship last year and we were able to win. We're happy about his past performance."

Smith, 53, could not be reached for comment.

He replaced former coach and athletic director Pete Pompey, who had been on administrative leave while the state's attorney's office investigated alleged misuse of athletic funds.

No charges were filed against Pompey, but the city school board transferred him to Edmondson, where he is athletic director and football coach.

Smith's Poets (23-3) ended the year with their second straight state title, a No. 2 ranking locally and a No. 5 ranking nationally.

"He came during a difficult time but handled it well," Brown said.

"My main concern is that students be scholars first. We wanted a coach who could integrate a basketball and academic program. Paul did it very well."
